The main purpose of this article is to help non-designers understand the logo design process, general terms, requirements and things to remember when ordering a logo.

When you decided that your company needs a logo you need to think if you need a completely new logo or redesign the old one (of course, if you have it) before searching for a designer. Redesign of the existing logo is often cheaper than design of a new logo.

There are a huge number of companies which offer logo design services. All of them have different prices, number of concepts and revisions offered. Some of them can design business stationery for you. Let’s talk about every point in detail:

Price is important factor; it is very unusual to receive high quality at low price. But Internet is the place where designers work from all over the world and logos are going down in price. You can buy logo of satisfactory quality for $100 (yes, one hundred dollars). One of the very important factors affecting the price is whether design company uses clip-art (premade pictures or graphic elements) or creates unique logos. Be sure to find out this. Custom logos are much better because you will have exclusive logo nobody has.

Number of concepts is a number of ideas for logos which you will be offered after answering the logo design questionnaire. It is good to have more than one idea for logo because you will be able to choose. Usually, you will receive a couple of ideas in different styles. When you choose a concept for your logo you will be able to change it using revisions.

Number of revisions is a number of possible changes which you can request for a chosen logo design concept free of charge. You can change everything including color, font, graphic element, arrangement of the elements. The more revisions you have the more chances you receive a logo of your dream.

Turnaround time is an amount of time needed for work on your logo. Usually design process takes from 3 to 10 days. There are companies, which can do urgent orders but the cost of logo will be higher.

Number of designers – recently design companies started to indicate number of designers working on your project. Big number of designers should guarantee diversity of the concepts, but this factor is difficult to control and it is difficult to find out how many designers really worked on your project.

Stationery design – it is good if your logo design company will design business cards, letterhead and envelope for you. Usually, you will receive a couple of concepts of business stationery to choose from.

Things to remember during the communications with logo design company:

1. Number of colors of your logo. The more colors you have the more expensive will be cost of printing services.

2. Files optimized for print. Be sure to request files optimized for home and professional printing (tif, pdf, jpg, eps).

3. Source files of your logo (ai, cdr). Be sure to request source files of your logo; you may need them in future.

4. Use of photos in logo. It is very bad idea to use photos in your logo. Such logos are overloaded with graphic elements and have non-professional look.

5. Logotype with abbreviation or without company name. It is very difficult to advertise and promote your company with such logo. Logos with acronyms are good for very big companies which have a lot of money for marketing.

Logo is very important for each company and serves the crucial role of successful marketing. It is vitally important to have good logo from the beginning because redesign of logo will cost you a lot because of need to inform you clients about rebranding, change business stationery and logos on signs, cars, etc.

People get graphic designers and logo designers for a job because they cannot do it themselves. A client and graphic designer is vastly different from each other. However, they have to work together to produce good results; the former sets the direction while the latter leads the way. Know and understand a few things.

This is a guide rule of what not to do when dealing with logo designers. Having the proper mindset and decorum on this transaction will make this a lot smoother and frustration free.

These are the 5 don’ts in working with a logo design project as a client:

1. Do not assume a logo design is cheap.

Creative design is not an easy task. Inspiration and a lot of attention to details is what makes the output so appealing. Assuming a logo design to be child’s play is an insult, and trust me, it will not endear you to the logo designers you are contracting for the job.

On he other hand, it does not mean you cannot find an affordable logo design. The best logo designs are usually in the middle of the highest priced and the cheapest ones offered in the industry. Be wary of super cheap logos too. The best thing to d is research a little, get an idea of how, much a logo design costs.

2. Do not offer barters or deals instead of professional fees.

A quick way for you to be ignored by logo designers is to treat this as not a business transaction but a trade-off. Refrain from offering free ads, links, referrals or whatnots in exchange for a logo design. Its a business transaction, and logo designers view these kinds of clients as not worth their time. Take them professionally and they will be serious about answering your logo design needs.

3. Do not entrust the job to a logo designer you are not comfortable talking to.

Not that there’s anything wrong with silent types, but having rapport with the logo designer you choose will help things go smoothly. When you give your ideas about what the design ought to look like, there’s nothing quite reassuring than knowing you are talking to someone who will get them.

Talking to people who does not know how to communicate well is a pain, and you know it. Logo designers who can barely speak intelligible English? They may have excellent skills, but it wouldn’t be worth anything if you can’t understand each other.

4. Do not think that a logo design contest is the answer to everything.

On a budget and looking for wide choices? Don’t necessarily think that holding a contest is the solution. A client and a logo designer builds a relationship, and that relationship doesn’t really end. A professional logo designer will look deeply into the nature of your business and would try to come up with something classic- because he knows, and wants for your company to grow and succeed for many years.

A logo design contest is a wham and bam solution. A true professional logo designer will balk into joining such contests, so most likely you will get students and low-esteemed designers to join. A contest is not a good answer to a logo designer’s craftsmanship.

5. Do not change your logo design just right after you receive it.

Some do understand, you deem the design yours (with the contract and all) and you can change it if you want to, whenever you want to. Depending on you contract arrangements, this whole thing can be fodder for a good argument, but the bottom line is, respect for the logo design man is concerned.

Common courtesy tells you to at least tell the logo design man if you want the design altered by another person. If you are unsatisfied with the design, your reasons will tell him if he did something wrong or if the reason substantial and trivial, tell him its not big deal.

Its a matter of respect for the work. At the very least, being a courteous and honorable client will make you someone who logo designers would still want to work with in the future.

Remember that professional logo designers, the really good ones, are just as selective of their clients as you are with them. Finding one with whom you can well work with is great, you should treasure them.

Everyone wants his company logo to be the best but how good is good? How do we define a good logo? Is it necessary to be colorful or an exquisite piece of art? Can a simple design work as a good logo? We are often in a dilemma.

Now to define a good logo design we first need to understand the purpose of having a logo. A corporate logo is one of the most essential branding elements for your company. It should be instrumental in building your corporate identity and should successfully exude the company’s attitude. The viewers must have some idea about the disposition, character, or fundamental values of your company through your logo. The functionality of a logo does not end here, I have not yet mentioned the most important function of a corporate logo. Your logo should be able to build a positive, strong and long lasting impression on existing and prospective customers. The very moment a person views your logo, even a part of it, he should think of your company.

Just think of some of the all time great logos, McDonalds’, IBM, Nike– the moment you see their logos, even if you see a part of it or may be in Black and White (there comes another important aspect!) are you able to think of anything else than the respective company? The answer is definitely NO! The first thing that comes to your mind is the name of the company. This shows how strong an impression their logo leaves in our mind. Isn’t that, what all of us are looking for?

How do you get your logo to leave such a strong long lasting impression? The key to this question is to make it easy to remember. Companies often make the mistake of thinking that a complicated artistic design might work well for them, while the reverse is true, in most cases. The simpler your logo is, the easier it is to remember and so it leaves a stronger impression on the people.

You also need to think of all the possible mediums where you are going to use your logo. You are not going to use your logo in only one medium, you might use it on your business cards and stationery, you might use it in your website, you might also use it in the conventional media like newspaper classifieds and magazines. This is why it is most important to inform your logo designers about the possible mediums where you are going to use your logo. You should also check if your logo looks good in Black and White, because tomorrow if you need to get a document in black and white with your logo on it, it should be very easily compatible to that as well.

In the beginning of this article, I have mentioned, that your logo can successfully convey the character and nature of your business to its viewers. How do we do that? There are a host of factors that are considered before designing a logo. When you place an order for a logo design, as a client it is your responsibility to give a clear brief of your company profile, the industry you are in and the nature of logo that you are looking for, to the designers. If you are not sure about the nature of logo that suits your company, let the logo design firm decide on that. There are many logo design companies who are experienced and they will be much better equipped to suggest you the correct type of logos. Any good logo design firm would conduct a market research about the different types of logos used in your industry by your competitors and their impact on the people. Based on that they will deliver you a set of logos from which you can choose any one and then they will customize that to your perfection.

If you have any corporate colors, as we have red for McDonalds’, it will be wise to suggest the designers to use that color in your logo-any good designer would anyhow do that.

One last word, as with any other industry, it is definitely beneficial to buy professional service than to go for any amateur designs just to save a few dollars. You might be the best in your industry but they know their job better than you, so if you want to get a good result, try to depend on your logo design company. I do understand that there are certain logo design companies that charge exorbitant rate to create a logo design but the industry is changing. These days there are companies that offer excellent logos for nominal charges. So before you decide to place your order for your logo design, check the portfolio of the company and then check the price tag. You can definitely find some professional logo designs at affordable rates.

How to write a design brief?

You are about to launch a new company your office, people and the infrastructure is ready. And you have a fair idea about how your business is going to be. So, now is the time to go for the graphic or logo design work. Or, the scenario is a little different; you are already in business but want a fresh new design for all your company graphics. The first vital thing to do is to write down a detailed design brief.

There are two main reasons why you should write a design brief:

It will make sure what exactly YOU want to achieve from your design project, as a business owner or manager.

This brief will act as a reference point for graphic or logo designers and will give them key areas to concentrate on. This initial effort will save you time and money to achieve the end result. If you supply as much information and details to your graphic designer at the start of the project, he/she would be able to give you more value for your money.

To help you give a head start, here are some points which you should consider while writing your logo and graphic design project brief. A design brief should include:

Your Corporate Profile

Assumption by the graphic designer is not good as incorrect information about your company can make the entire design process absolutely worthless. So, providing a summary of your current business and a brief about its history and background is a must.

Your Company’s Market Position

Provide a realistic evaluation of your company, products, services, or brand relative to your competition’s performance.

Current situation or need that called for this design project

Mention what is the reason of initiating this design project. For example, any change/addition of products and services that drastically needs to become part of all your advertising needs.

Previous marketing and communication materials

Supply all the previous and current communication materials (like advertising, mailers, graphic/logo design, public relations) etc.

Communication, context- “key message”

What’s the specific message you want to convey through your design project?

Target market/clients

Specify your target market, demographically also. Mention the age, income, gender, employment, or lifestyle of those people you want your message and business to reach.

Objectives

What is the objective of this design project? Specify them clearly and include some kind of a measure also for the desired results.

Budget

Clearly mention your budget to get the right designer for yourself.

Schedules and deadline, if any

Give your graphic and logo designer a clear and realistic schedule for the deadlines of your project to get it done on time.

Take the following into consideration while creating your design brief:

- Consultation, Research

- Creative design pieces

- Production

- Delivery

There are many designers who have their own design brief templates that you can fill at the beginning of your project.

This makes the whole design process professional, effective and ultimately saves time and money.

How much should a logo design cost? The correct answer to this popular question is anywhere from nothing up to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

To say that ‘you get what you pay for’ would be true most of the time but not all of the time. If you are not working with trusted professionals then logo design can be ‘hit and miss’. There are many cases where businesses have spent a lot of money and received poor designs and cases where companies have spent only a little and ended up with fantastic results.

The Internet has made the process of getting a logo design easier and more affordable than ever before. Many logo design firms have sprung up on the Internet and by using the Internet as a platform to do business have been able to reduce overheads and still offer a quality service.

In this article we explain how price should not be such a priority when it comes to getting a logo and then we look at the price ranges for some of the various options.

The Importance of Price

Price is often the first thing that people think about when looking at various options for logo design. It is great to get a good deal with a cheap logo design and to try and save a bit of money but stop and think for a moment about how important a logo design is to your company.

With your logo being on your stationery, website, building signage, advertising and even on vehicles it is often the first aspect of your company that customers come into contact with. Within a few seconds consumers will subconsciously examine your logo and create their first impressions of your company. These first few seconds are very important in conveying the right message to them and the quality of your company logo can in some cases help to determine whether you get those customers or they go to the competition.

Your logo is an integral part of your organizations marketing plan and a fair amount of the company’s budget should be allocated to it just as a healthy budget is usually allocated to other marketing activities.

Spending $300 on a Logo may seem like a lot but if you spread the cost out over a period of say 10 years it only works out to a few dollars a month (a small amount compared to a monthly marketing budget that could run into hundreds or thousands of dollars).

With these thoughts in mind it becomes clear that maybe price shouldn’t be the main focus when shopping around for a logo provider.

So let’s examine some of the options available to you when it comes to getting a logo, starting from the lowest price range and finishing at the highest price range.

The Free Model

There are plenty of ‘do it yourself’ logo design templates that are available online for prices that range anywhere from free up to around $30 or $40. You can create a basic design with some clip-art or purchase a ‘ready to go’ template, customize the name to suit your needs and you then have an instant logo for your business.

Some companies give you the chance to browse through hundreds of generic designs suitable for various industries and then order one that can often be downloaded immediately.

The downside with these options is that some of the components that users can incorporate into their logo design such as shapes, symbols and clip art are unoriginal and in use by many other businesses. Without any design experience users usually end up with amateurish looking logos and sometimes even have to include a small credit on the logo referring to the site that was used to create it.

You must also consider that you may not have ownership rights over your logo design as these rights may be retained by the website that sold you the design.

Logo Design Software

You can now purchase some quite sophisticated logo design software that can assist you in the creation of professional looking logos on your home PC. The downside is that the better software packages can be expensive, there is a bit of a learning curve related to using the software properly and these packages still require some artistic input on the part of the user. Why would you bother really for only one or two logos if you are not a design professional?

Custom Logo Design

This option is the one that I recommend above all the others. By having a logo design tailor made by a graphic designer to suit your company’s needs you are assured of getting an original, professional looking design that is suitable to your requirements. Your logo designer does all the design work while you, as the customer still get a considerable amount of input into the design process. Most reputable custom logo design firms will ensure that their work doesn’t infringe on the trademarks of other companies so you can be guaranteed ownership rights to your logo.

Generally you can get a good quality custom logo design online for between $150 and $350 depending on the complexity of the package that you order (the number of initial concepts, the number of designers working on your case and the number of revisions that are permitted).

Design Competitions

There are now several websites that allow you to hold a competition for your logo design. Firstly, you put up a prize which usually has to be around $300 to $400 or more and a briefing for designers to understand the project. Then, designers from around the world submit their designs and you choose a winner who is awarded the prize money (after the website deducts their commission).

This method can work well if your offer a prize that is a considerable amount and you get a good response from designers. However you should first confirm with the website that you will have ownership rights to the winning design that you select. This method, while an interesting concept, usually ends up costing more than a custom logo design though and offers a little more risk as well.

Traditional Design Firms

For larger companies with huge budgets, meeting with designers face to face to communicate is still the preferred method. This is the most expensive method though as it usually involves several meetings and discussions with designers at their offices. Prices for this kind of personalized service usually start at around $500 and depending on the firm and the importance of the project costs can be much more than this. The great thing about online design firms is that they can cut costs by avoiding coffee drinking sessions with clients and can operate out of cheaper office space instead of fancy design studios.

Think about why you need the logo. If it’s just for a website or a short term project you should be fine with some of the cheaper service providers. If, however you are building a future Fortune 500 corporation then you may want to spend at least $200 to $300 and possibly a lot more to make sure that you are starting off with a great logo design to suit your aspirations.

How much should a logo design cost? It should cost as much as you are prepared to pay. But remember that price is not everything when it comes to such an important decision for the future of your business.

By: Alfred Anderson

The emergence of the word “logo” can be traced back to ancient Greece. A logo essentially referred to a form of cipher consisting of the initials of a name designed for easy recognition among the viewers. Such ciphers/ logos were widely used as monograms of the rulers and their dynasties in the ancient Greek and Roman coins. During the thirteenth century, the concept of logo design developed from ordinary ciphers to distinct trademarks for various traders and organizations.

The evolution of a logo as an indispensable branding strategy started of in the 1800’s. This was marked by the well-known story of a London based curio dealer named Marcus Samuel who used to sell shell-covered boxes. Over a period of time his business flourished and thus he started dealing in a variety of objects like kerosene, jewel and later on oil. By the year 1830 his company had a worldwide presence. Finally in the year 1897 his business was popularly known as the Shell Transport and Trading Company being visually represented by a simple seashell as its trademark/ logo, which later on became one of the most successful and probably the world’s best-known logo design. It was during this period, the very essence of a logo graduated a step further with the introduction of the famous “Rock of Gibraltar” logo representing Prudential Financial, Inc. This particular trademark served not only as a simple logo design but also projected the company as a powerful entity possessing the similar attributes of endurance and security as that of the “Rock of Gibraltar”. This is a classic example of how a relevant graphical image can communicate a message with a lot more impact that what mere words can do.

Over the years, rapid industrialization led to fierce competition, which in turn led to an increased importance of having a logo as the brand identifier. In order to stay and lead a competition, a distinct logo design is a crucial part of a company’s branding strategy. Today, there are thousands of logos around us and many more are added every year, out of which only a few stay in our mind. In such a competitive market, every corporate entity desires to have a distinct and powerful presence. A good logo design certainly helps in building up a strong brand presence of the company.

In the present context, a logo is not just a text or a graphical image designed to represent a company. A variety of factors are taken into consideration that finally results into a good logo design. A good logo design is the result of extensive research, which can only be carried out by professional logo design companies. Over the centuries, good corporate logo designs have played a vital part in scripting the success stories of various companies and organizations. In the coming years, with the introduction of many more brands and business entities, the marketplace will get even more competitive, and thus the services of a professional logo firm can only facilitate a company in carving out a niche segment for themselves.

By: Sam D’Costa

Two most important vital parts of your marketing campaign are business brochures and advertising flyers. It is always important to do your brochures, cards and flyers with an overall design in mind. You want to project the image of your business that is favorable and will stick in the minds of your customers. The best way to do that is to have an interesting and unique logo, and to plant that on everything you print.

The next question arises, how to design a logo that is not only eye-catching and unique, but also modern. Well, the answer is to keep up with the latest trends of designing. Let us now look at the four hottest trends in logo design in today’s market.

Waves

Companies that want to project an image of fluidity and rapid movement might go for waves in their logos. These waves give positive images to customers and also make for attractive designs. The shape of the waves, and the fading color pattern usually used within them, are very adaptable to other types of items included in the logo. Waves have quickly raised up the ranks of popular logo designs.

Web 2.0

According to the definition in Wikipedia, Web 2.0 is a trend in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to facilitate creativity, information and collaboration among users.

Creativity, information sharing and collaboration – All three are important for a company trying to establish itself. But Web 2.0 is a trend, not a particular type of design. However, its popularity has risen so high in a short span of time that in the logo design business, Web 2.0 has come to be defined as any new, innovative and trendy logo.

There are certain features that distinguish Web 2.0 designs. They have bright colors, accurate icons and shiny surfaces.

Transparency

Transparency is the ability to see through something. This concept might not fit into logo design. You want your customers see your logo, not see through it. But transparency has two major benefits: it is easily adaptable to include other designs and it is wonderful at focusing a customer’s attention on particular spot.

3D Images

3D logo design has been in logo design for years. But logo designers face problems designing 3D logos. For one, making a 3D logo look the same on paper as it does on a computer is not always an easy task. But the new trend in 3D logos is to create an organic effect. The idea is to make the image appear alive and original at the same time, while not being overly intensive. This has become an effective technique in logo design.
